Top Five Career Tips For New College Students

When you visit and sign up to any online Cal jobs board be sure to set up an email alert of new jobs fitting the criteria you specify, in fact in MPUG you should choose the Job Alerts tab, then fill out the form. The Alert Name allows you to specify a title for a specific type of search alert, such as all jobs in a given locale or that include a particular keyword in the job description. Once you’re done setting up the alert details, click “Create Job Alert.” Each alert will be included in a list that appears at the top of the page.

Even after four years of schooling it would be expected that a graduate would have the necessary skills to conduct themselves in the job market. But even with all the time and money invested students are finding the need to enter graduate school. The Rutgers work trends division found that “62% believe they will need more formal education if they are to be successful in their chosen careers” (Godofsky, Zukin, Van Horn 18). This may further their entrance into the job market and increase the debt total that has accumulated. But on the other hand they can gain valuable work experience considering many graduate students become teacher assistants or lab techs with the professors in their area of study.

Whatever path you choose, remember that your resume is the foundation for all of your job search marketing materials. Even if you don’t actually “print” the paper out.

Choose a quiet place to do your job search with a computer, phone and personal calendar. This could be at home, the library or your local career center.

Next be sure to drive carefully. Try not to panic. That is extremely difficult. You just want to be with your child or loved one. We prayed continuously on the way there. We didn’t even know at this point which hospital they were taking him to. We got a call from the hospital telling us which one he was at. They also got verbal permission from us to do what they needed to, if they had to do something before we got there.

Network with your neighbors. Seventy to eighty percent of jobs are found through networking, so get out there and talk to the people you know. Tell everyone you’re related to, everyone you see each day and everyone you meet (association members, friends of friends, airplane seatmates) that you are looking for a job and you’d love any advice or ideas they can provide. Most people are happy to offer some suggestions-or, even better, a hot lead.

You can make any job turn into something big. You may start out in the mail room, but who said you had to stay there. Getting your foot in the door with a company is a wonderful start. Once you’re in a company you want to work for, you can apply internally and prove your abilities for promotion.

Establishing A Career Plan

Our Hair. Our hair is our crowning glory. It is indicative of our overall health and grooming habits to the outside world. It is critical when you are job searching.

Career field resumes — that are geared to telling a story about the future Hill staffer you, or the future Peace Corps volunteer you. These resumes might only resemble each other by your name in bold at the top. Your Hill resume tells me everything you’ve ever done politically and with research and writing, and dealing with the public. And possibly, if you need to fill some space, your domestic policy coursework. And not much more. Your Peace Corps resume tells me everything you’ve ever done as a volunteer, all of your international travel, your language capabilities, and possibly, all of your international coursework. And not much more.

If you are looking to get a job where you can express creativity, spend your senior year creating an online portfolio. Get this portfolio up and running so that you can add that to your resume for employers to see.

If it is your first time away from home, don’t fear calling your parents. Though you may feel embarrassed, they love you. If something is scary or overwhelming, they are still your greatest allies. Otherwise, consider an older sibling or close friend. Sometimes, life can seem overwhelming. Older people really do understand.

We were able to bring him home and coddle him in a couple of hours. We were very relieved. We were extremely grateful that it wasn’t serious. He is a wrestler and has a high pain tolerance. When he is in pain we know that he is really in pain. He said that the chest pains were so severe he felt like he had the wind knocked out of him. He had a medium rare steak the night before at Chili’s Restaurant. I hope he doesn’t do that again.

Below are some sample answers. Please be sure to practice your answer with a friend or two. If you are a college graduate, the career center staff should be happy to help you prepare for a job interview, and can help you review your answer to this question.

2) Network. Speak to your instructors/professors. When on your clinicals, speak to your preceptors to see about job opportunities when you graduate and pass the licensure examination. Even if your clinical site has no openings, your preceptors know people. Ask for names and contact information. And then.contact the individuals!

Search like it’s your full time job. Again, spend time searching. This isn’t just a glance like you’re browsing e-bay for a moment in the afternoon. To find your job you will have to really look, unless of course you have all your ducks in a row and you have something lined up.
