When you visit and sign up to any online Cal jobs board be sure to set up an email alert of new jobs fitting the criteria you specify, in fact in MPUG you should choose the Job Alerts tab, then fill out the form. The Alert Name allows you to specify a title for a specific type of search alert, such as all jobs in a given locale or that include a particular keyword in the job description. Once you’re done setting up the alert details, click “Create Job Alert.” Each alert will be included in a list that appears at the top of the page.
Even after four years of schooling it would be expected that a graduate would have the necessary skills to conduct themselves in the job market. But even with all the time and money invested students are finding the need to enter graduate school. The Rutgers work trends division found that “62% believe they will need more formal education if they are to be successful in their chosen careers” (Godofsky, Zukin, Van Horn 18). This may further their entrance into the job market and increase the debt total that has accumulated. But on the other hand they can gain valuable work experience considering many graduate students become teacher assistants or lab techs with the professors in their area of study.
Whatever path you choose, remember that your resume is the foundation for all of your job search marketing materials. Even if you don’t actually “print” the paper out.
Choose a quiet place to do your job search with a computer, phone and personal calendar. This could be at home, the library or your local career center.
Next be sure to drive carefully. Try not to panic. That is extremely difficult. You just want to be with your child or loved one. We prayed continuously on the way there. We didn’t even know at this point which hospital they were taking him to. We got a call from the hospital telling us which one he was at. They also got verbal permission from us to do what they needed to, if they had to do something before we got there.
Network with your neighbors. Seventy to eighty percent of jobs are found through networking, so get out there and talk to the people you know. Tell everyone you’re related to, everyone you see each day and everyone you meet (association members, friends of friends, airplane seatmates) that you are looking for a job and you’d love any advice or ideas they can provide. Most people are happy to offer some suggestions-or, even better, a hot lead.
You can make any job turn into something big. You may start out in the mail room, but who said you had to stay there. Getting your foot in the door with a company is a wonderful start. Once you’re in a company you want to work for, you can apply internally and prove your abilities for promotion.
